Free Online Tool to Add Page Numbers to a PDF
Documents that started life without page numbers - exported reports, scanned booklets, combined PDFs - are much easier to navigate and reference once numbered. LovePDFImg's Page Numbers tool adds a number to every page of your PDF, with control over where it appears, what format it uses, and which number it starts from.
Numbers are drawn directly onto each page using your browser's JavaScript engine, so the original content stays exactly as it was, just with a number layered in the position you choose. As with all core tools here, everything happens locally - your file is never uploaded to a server.
What the page numbers look like
Numbers are written in Helvetica in a dark grey, at the size you choose between 8 and 24. They sit 24 points in from the left or right edge. Numbers at the top start 24 points below the top edge, and numbers at the bottom sit 12 points above the bottom edge, which keeps them inside most printer margins.
The number is drawn on top of the existing page, so it will overlap anything already printed in that spot. If your PDF already has a footer or a header, try a different corner, such as top right instead of bottom center. The tool cannot remove numbers once they are added, so keep your original file until you are happy with the result.
Starting from a different number
Set "Start at" when your PDF continues from another document. If a chapter begins on page 25, enter 25 and the first page of this file is numbered 25, the next 26, and so on.
One detail to know about the "1 of N" format: N is the number of the last page, not the page count. A 10-page file starting at 5 reads "5 of 14", "6 of 14" and so on up to "14 of 14". That keeps the total consistent with the numbers you can see.
Skipping a cover page
This tool numbers every page in the file, so it cannot leave a cover page blank on its own. The simple workaround takes a minute: use Split PDF to separate the cover, add numbers to the rest here, then put the two back together with Merge PDF with the cover first. Set "Start at" to 2 if you want the first inside page to count as page 2.
