AVIF to JPG converter

AVIF is a newer image format that keeps files small, and more websites now serve their pictures as AVIF. The catch is that not every editor, email program, upload form or older device can open it. This converter turns AVIF images into ordinary JPG files that work almost everywhere.

Choose the JPG quality, pick a background color for any transparent areas, and convert one image or many. Each finished image shows a small preview and its new file size, and you can download images individually or as a ZIP. If you want a lossless result or transparency, WebP to PNG and JPG to PNG cover related formats, and Compress JPG can shrink the results further.

Frequently Asked Questions

AVIF is a modern image format that stores pictures in much smaller files than JPG at similar quality. Many websites now serve AVIF, but some editors, email programs, upload forms and older devices still cannot open it. Converting to JPG gives you a file that works almost everywhere.
No. Your images are opened and converted by your browser on your own device, using the AVIF support built into the browser, and the JPG files are created there too. No converter library has to be downloaded for the conversion itself. If you use the ZIP download, the page loads a small ZIP library (JSZip) from the cdnjs network. Your images are never sent anywhere.
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can open AVIF images, and this tool uses that built-in support. Older browsers cannot. If your browser does not support AVIF, the page shows a notice and a message on each file, and updating the browser or trying another one solves it.
AVIF images can contain transparency, but JPG cannot. Transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose, which is white by default. Pick black or any other color if white does not suit the image.
JPG compression is lossy, so converting re-encodes the picture. At the default quality of 90 the difference is rarely visible at normal viewing sizes. AVIF compresses more efficiently than JPG, so a JPG of similar quality is usually larger. Lower the quality setting before converting, or use the Compress JPG tool afterwards, to make the files smaller.
No. The converted JPG files do not include the metadata stored in the original, such as the date taken, GPS location or camera model. Keep the original AVIF files if you need that information.
Only the first frame is converted, because JPG cannot hold animation. The list marks files that look animated so you know a single still image was created.
