How to Clean Up a Messy Scanned Document

Scanners and multi-function printers are convenient right up until the output has three problems at once - a page in the wrong spot, another one sideways, and the whole thing is 40MB. Fixing these in the wrong order means redoing work, so here's a sequence that doesn't.

Fix Order First

Start with sequence, before anything else. Open Reorder PDF Pages and look at the thumbnails - misplaced pages are usually obvious once you can see them laid out visually rather than scrolling one at a time. Drag them into the right order and save. Doing this first matters because the next two steps are easier to verify once you know you're looking at pages in the correct sequence.

👉 Step one: Reorder PDF Pages - get the sequence right before touching anything else.

Then Fix Orientation

With the order sorted, go through and fix any sideways or upside-down pages using Rotate PDF. You can select individual pages, so pages that scanned correctly stay untouched while you fix the ones that didn't.

Then Compress

File size last, because compression works on the final content - there's no benefit to shrinking a page before you've confirmed it's the right page in the right orientation. Compress PDF typically cuts a scanned document down substantially without a visible quality hit, since scans are essentially photographs and have plenty of compression headroom.

If Pages Need to Be Removed Entirely

Sometimes a "messy" scan includes a blank page the scanner picked up by accident, or a duplicate. Delete PDF Pages handles that - worth doing during the reorder step, since you're already looking at every page individually at that point.

One Pass, Not Three Separate Sessions

Because each of these tools works on the file you just downloaded from the previous one, the whole cleanup - reorder, rotate, delete extras, compress - can realistically happen in one sitting rather than as separate tasks you keep meaning to get back to.
